Aer Lingus likely to move operations from Terminal 1 to Terminal 2 at London Heathrow next year

Ireland’s national flag carrier Aer Lingus recently disclosed that it is currently holding discussions with the aviation authorities at London Heathrow Airport on moving its operations from Terminal 1 to Terminal 2 from next year.

Aer Lingus flights are likely to be operated out to Terminal 2, as London Heathrow Airport’s Terminal 1 is due for a major upgrade ever since it opened in 1969. All the airlines operating out of Terminal 1 have started making preparations to shift their operations to another terminal.

The newly-built Terminal 2, which is spread over 200,000 sq m area, is likely to be opened next year. The new terminal has the capacity to handle 30 million passengers annually. The new Terminal 2 is also Europe’s first green terminal, where CO2 emissions will have a reduction of 40 percent.

Aer Lingus in a statement said that the new terminal is likely to host Star Alliance airlines. The 27-member airlines alliance includes United Airlines, South African Airways, Lufthansa, Air China, Thai Airways, Singapore Airlines and Turkish Airlines. Currently, Aer Lingus has codeshare pacts with some Star Alliance members, including United Airlines, Thai Airways and Singapore Airlines.
