Smaller losses for Aer Lingus in Q1 2012

Ireland’s national carrier Aer Lingus recently announced its operational results for the first quarter of 2012 and was slightly displeased at the outcome.

Ireland flights though carried a good number of passengers reporting an improvement in its traffic. The airline reported that its yield per passenger was up 8.4 percent, while passenger numbers booking Aer Lingus flights tickets increased by 6.6 percent. The airline also stated that its long haul Q1 passenger volumes and yield up 12.1 percent and 11.2 percent, respectively, as compared to the last year.

Despite the increase in passenger traffic, the airline, however, reported smaller losses in the first three months of this year as compared to the same period in 2011. The airline declared its results for the period from January 1 to March 31, 2012, and stated that it suffered a loss of $46.96 million (36.1 million Euros) in Q1 2012 as compared to $69.86 million (53.7 million Euros) in Q1 2011, which is a significant 32.8 percent improvement in terms of losses suffered in Q1 last year. Aer Lingus also said that its total Q1 revenue increased by 15.4 percent as compared to last year.
