AeroMexico, other Mexican carriers help boost Mexico City Airport traffic in 2012

A recent survey indicated that low-cost carriers continue to dominate the domestic aviation market in Mexico, accounting for 55 percent of passenger traffic. The report said that a number of Mexican carriers, including AeroMexico, Volaris and Interjet acted swiftly and were quick enough in picking up pace in Mexico’s domestic market after Mexicana shut operations in 2010.

According to the report, AeroMexico flights and those by other Mexican carriers have significantly helped in boosting the domestic air traffic. In the first four months of 2012, domestic air traffic increased over 12 percent, while there was over 8 percent growth in international traffic. The report stated that at the current pace the year 2012 well on course to prove itself as Mexico’s busiest ever year for air traffic.
 
In 2011, the airports in Mexico handled about 76 million passengers, up 4.5 percent over 2010. The report also pointed out that Mexico City Airport continues to remain as the prominent hub in Mexico, which handled an additional 26 million passengers in 2011, up 9.3 percent, as compared to 2010.
