Cape Air gets DOT support for Albany and Boston flights

It seemed for quite a while that Cape Air’s services to Albany and Boston was on the rocks. The airline has however managed to pull it off and will continue to serve the two destinations from Massena.

Media reports recently said that the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has extended its support to Cape Air by renewing its contracts under the Essential Air Service program.

According to the reports, the airline will continue its flights to Boston and Albany from Massena for the next two years. The airline’s contract has also been renewed for providing flights services to these two destinations from Ogdensburg as well for another four years.

Cape Air utilizes its 9-seat Cessna 402 aircraft to serve these routes from both Massena and Ogdensburg. The local officials from Massena have offered their strong support to the airline. Also, not to be left behind is the Ogdensburg City Council which unanimously voted “to endorse Cape Air as the provider of choice”.
 
The Albany-Massena and Albany-Ogdensburg routes will be served with three roundtrip flights daily, with both the flights continuing onwards to Boston.

The U.S. Department of Transportation said that Cape Air will be provided about $5 million to continue its services on these routes under the Essential Air Service, which is in fact subsidized air service for rural communities.

With the renewed funding now, Cape Air, which is based at Barnstable Municipal Airport in Hyannis, will be offering flights to Albany and Boston from Massena for two-year term from April 1, 2015 through March 30, 2017.
