Dubai International Airport gets ATN ‘Airport of the Year’ award

Dubai International Airport (DXB), which is presently the No. 1 airport in the world for international passenger traffic and main hub of Emirates Airline, has been presented with the ‘Airport of the Year’ award during the recently-concluded Air Transport News Awards 2015 at Geneva in Switzerland.

The award is presented annually by renowned publication Air Transport News (ATN). This is the only international prize given to recognize all the main categories of the air transport industry. The awards are based on the votes received by ATN readers and also on the deliberations of a jury drawn from various sections of the aviation industry.

The award was received by Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports. Griffiths, while receiving the award, said, “The winning of the award is significant and quite meaningful as it has come after voting by the passengers using the airport and also by the experts from the aviation industry.” He also said that it is a matter of great pride that Dubai International Airport continues to be the global hub of choice for international travelers.

Media reports quoting the Dubai Airports’ 2014 Yearbook said that Dubai International Airport has been recognized as the world’s leading hub for Airbus A380 operations in 2014.

The reports said that the expansion of Airbus A380 fleet by Emirates Airline has boosted the growth in A380 movements. With more than 50 Airbus A380 aircrafts presently in operation, Emirates Airline has now become the biggest operator of the double-decker aircraft in the world.

According to the reports, Dubai International Airport handled a total of 15,098 A380 flights to 39 destinations across the world during 2014. This has been a significant increase when compared to 10,608 A380 scheduled flights to 26 destinations in 2013.
