Talking about safety, most of the crime is perpetrated against the locals, and the visitors are usually given a wide berth. This to be specially avoided during night time and also keep in mind to avid the Central Train Station then.

A crucial point to take note of is that all US, UK, Australia, Canada, NZ, Japan, Ireland and Israel citizens only have to show their passport to get to enter Germany, i.e. if you are looking for a stay of up to three months. Residents of the European Union can stay as long as they like, after showing their official ID. All other people need to apply for a tourist visa.
