This museum traces the history and how medical sciences developed in Hong Kong. The museum is housed in an area of ten thousand square feet. The entire museum complex comprises of 1 Lecture Room, 1 Library, 1 Gallery for Tai Ping Shan View, and 11 Exhibition Galleries. The museum presents a fascinating insight to its visitors arousing interest and provides adequate knowledge about diseases and health, the past conquests made, the existing evolutions, and the future challenges particularly in context to Hong Kong.

The prime objective of the Hong Kong Museum of Medical Sciences is to help visitors and medical students explore the linkages between Western and Chinese medicine, and to subsequently advocate research in these areas. The museum also aims to serve as an information center, and conserving and restoring medical objects of historical importance.

Prior to being transformed into the Hong Kong Museum of Medical Sciences, the first incarnation was in the form of the Bacteriological Institute, which was founded in 1906. It was Hong Kong’s 1st purpose-made medical lab. It came up near Tai Ping Shan plague irruption location. The institute progressed with years to come and played an important role in developing medical service in Hong Kong. The role of Bacteriological Institute was later changed and hence its name as well to the ‘Pathological Institute’. During the 1950s, the Hong Kong Government finally agreed to transform it into the Hong Kong Museum of Medical Sciences.

The Herbal Garden is the prominent highlight here. Here visitors get opportunity to see a variety of herbs being grown that goes into the making of famous Chinese herbal medicines. The exhibition here showcases the development of Chinese Medicine and helps understand about Western Medicine as well.
