Dr Cyril and Mrs Esther Adler together established the Adler Museum of Medicine in 1962. Their private collection of pharmacological and medical memorabilia is simply remarkable and comprises a major part of the museum. Over 40,000 objects prominently highlighting the history of medicine pharmacy and dentistry over the ages comprise the collection of the museum.

The Adler Museum of Medicine is currently housed at the University of Witwatersrand’s Wits Medical School in Johannesburg. The museum houses the first electrocardiograph (ECG) machine that was used in the Johannesburg General Hospital. Here you will also find several kinds of medical instruments used in ancient times. Some of these include Victorian ear trumpets, infamous ‘Iron lungs’ from 20th century polio epidemics, cranial crushers, and early cupping and bleeding instruments, and many more.
