Head of the River Race 2014 – London’s historic boating event

This historic boating event is held in spring every year and draws 400 crews from around the world for a fabulous and tough competition on the famous Thames River in London. This day-long annual event sees hundreds of boats converging on Thames for the competition. Each boat is manned by eight men who compete with each other rowing over the 4.25 mile championship course from Mortlake to Putney. Crews from different parts of the world take part in this boat racing competition. The event follows a tradition with the winner of the previous year’s race to start first. At 10 seconds interval the other crews in finishing order would follow. The new entrants to the competition would be placed in the alphabetical order and follow after the previous year’s competitors have finally left for the race.
 
The Head of the River Race first started in 1926. Cambridge and Tideway oarsman Steve Fairbairn was the founder of this event. The race began for the crews who wanted to practice long rows during the winter season to eventually prepare for the summer regatta. Ever since, it has become a fantastic event for the Londoners as well as visitors from across the world.
