Guide on when to Roam in Rome…

One of the most sought after holiday destination, every year thousands of people book airline flights to holiday at the splendid Italian city of Rome. Owing to such popularity, it is very easy to fall prey to the numerous tourist traps that the city is rife with. So before you book your cheap tickets to Rome on the international airlines, make sure that once you land in the city, you are not taken for a ride!

Once you land at the airport, do not hail a cab, but save money as you board a train. From the airport as you exit Fiumicino, get on board the Leonardo Express that takes you to the Termini Station or as you exit Ciampino make use of the Terravision shuttle service which takes you to the same station as the Leonardo Express.

The best way to outsmart the con game that Rome has fallen prey to is by planning and traveling smart. Firstly, book your flights to Rome keeping in mind the perfect season. Now the best season might not translate into the perfect season, especially in Rome. During the peak travel season of June and July, the city is visited by so many people that the experience might not be what you would have wanted it to be. Getting caught amidst the sea of humanity in the sweltering heat should be avoided, if possible.

Secondly, at no point during your vacation should you carry large amount of money on you. For that matter even do not place all your credit cards in one location. Distribute everything evenly and lock up your valuables in a hotel safe. While traveling avoid the Termini station at night and the Bus link no. 64.

If you do not want your holiday to burn a hole in the pocket then stay away from the pricey hotels and opt to stay at bed and breakfast inns, or rent a place at the outskirts of Rome. For your commute you can either rent a car or travel through the local trains. If you have to hail a taxi, make sure you are not being charged exorbitantly for it. To avoid paying more than you have to, always get into that taxi or cab which is registered and has a meter. If the cab for some reason doesn’t have a meter, then negotiate the rate for your commute with the driver.

The biggest scam that Rome has is the unofficial tour guides. Owing to its immense popularity, all sorts of “official” guides have mushroomed who are looking to make a quick buck at your expense. At most places you are not required to pay the guide, though you can definitely tip them. Before letting the guide take you on a trip, make it a point to ask if they are charging.

When it comes to packing your clothes and other necessities for your Roman Vacation, invest in a good pair of shoes. The city of Rome, involves a lot of walking, and to be on foot for most of your city excursions amounts to relying on sturdy shoes. So do not forget to wrap up the best walking shoes you have along with your other footwear.
