Frontier Airlines announces May results, overall passenger total declines 14 percent

Frontier Airlines recently announced its passenger traffic result for the month of May 2012. The airline was not much enthused and seemed downcast at the outcome.

The airline in a statement said that its overall passenger total declined 14 percent in May this year as compared to the same month in 2011. The airline said that it vigorously tried to implement its plans to reduce capacity on short-hop regional Frontier Airlines flights.

Providing details about its May results, Frontier Airlines said that its ‘mainline’ routes edged up 1 percent, and 90 percent of its seats flew full.

The Denver-based carrier said that it carried 1,147, 058 passengers in May (combining mainline and regional flights), down from 1,330,431 in May 2011. The airline’s capacity (a measure of the seats available to carry passengers expressed as available seat miles) dropped 10 percent in May, to 1.165 billion.

According to the airline, its revenue passenger miles (the number of paying passengers times miles flown) also declined 8 percent in May this year, to 1.046 billion.
