Jet Airways chief says taxes making airfares in India 200 to 300 percent higher than China

Naresh Goyal, Chief of Jet Airways, recently said that in India the airfares were nearly 200 to 300 percent higher because of higher taxes when compared with those in China and other countries. He said that with such higher taxes the growth of the aviation industry will become quite difficult.

According to Goyal, in the entire world it is only India which imposes service tax on its carriers. The imposition of higher taxes on Indian carriers is proving to be an impediment for the growth of the aviation industry in the country, he said.

Goyal said that the airfares of Chinese carriers are in fact one-third of those being charged by the Indian carriers because no taxes are being charged on the Chinese carriers by its government.
 
He compared the Chinese carriers with those in India, and said that the Chinese carriers had a strong support from the government because all of them are state-owned. However, Indian carriers lack such a support from the government, Goyal said.
 
Naresh Goyal also revealed plans about the airline's expansion and said that the company wants to begin Jet Airways flights to major cities in Europe, such as Paris, Frankfurt and Munich.
