Lufthansa flights within Germany, Europe under Germanwings

Lufthansa flights within Germany and Europe will now be operated under the Germanwings branding, media reports said recently.

Media reports quoted the Lufthansa Group as saying that its forthcoming budget carrier to be launched under the brand ‘Germanwings’ would be serving on the routes within Germany and Europe being currently operated by Lufthansa.

Lufthansa had announced its plans in September this year that a short-haul budget brand would come into being. The airline had then said that the future brand name would be disclosed at a later stage in the upcoming months.

The airline has now said that the existing Germanwings brand would be used to operate flights on short-haul domestic German and European routes offering point-to-point services.

Media reports indicated that the new low-cost model under Germanwings branding would be launched in January 2013. The airline, however, said that this would not be applicable to point-to-point services being currently operated through Frankfurt or Munich, and will continue to remain under the Lufthansa brand.
