Lufthansa to offset losses, planning to cut 1,000 jobs

German airline operator Deutsche Lufthansa AG, which operates Lufthansa flights, is planning to offset losses and has decided to embark on effective cost cutting measures.

The company recently announced that it has devised plans and is bracing to cut as many as 1,000 jobs at LSG Sky Chefs, the world’s biggest in-flight caterer. This is part of the company’s plan to save $1.9 billion (1.5 billion Euros) from group-wide expenses through 2014.

The company is yet to reveal the number of posts it will be ultimately scrapping. Josefine Corsten, company spokeswoman, said that initially Lufthansa will seek to eliminate the staff by not seeking the replacement of people who leave or retire.

Lufthansa has not been able to smoothly conduct its flights operations or sell Lufthansa flights tickets in great numbers in the first quarter of this year.

The airline, which is Europe’s second biggest carrier, had suffered $479.94 million (381 million Euros) operating losses in the first quarter of 2012. The airline has already cut 3,500 administrative positions or 20 percent of the total staff.

Apart from this, Lufthansa is also exploring plans to combine its short-haul operations outside of Frankfurt and Munich with its low-cost carrier Germanwings.
