Qatar Airways investing in sustainable aviation biofuel research

Media reports recently indicated that in the future Qatar Airways flights would be operated on biofuels. Qatar Airways in collaboration with Qatar University and Qatar Science and Technology Park are jointly working on a biofuel project aiming to build biofuel industry on sea organisms.

According to reports, Qatar University has made public the details of the research being currently undertaken into sustainable aviation biofuels made from marine organisms. The state-backed biofuel project is only one of its kind in the Middle East region.

The first public details of the research were highlighted coinciding with the opening of the UN climate change conference COP18 in Qatar’s capital Doha. The research is now into its third year.

Providing details about the biofuel project, the reports said that this is aimed at producing sustainable, affordable biofuels that don’t use valuable arable land and can be efficiently produced in the harsh climate of Qatar. The biofuels thus produced would provide an alternative energy source for the aviation industry.
