Qatar Airways wants planes rolled out on natural gas

The aviation industry has now started looking up to natural gas as a fuel source to battle climate change. Media reports quoted Akbar Al Baker, CEO of Qatar Airways, recently as saying that he would want Qatar Airways flights to be operated on natural gas in the future.

Baker said instead of running aircrafts on jet fuel made from petroleum it would be good that these are run on natural gas fuel as it is better for the environment.

He said that if Qatar puts its massive natural gas reserves into effective use for operating flights then this could help combat climate change and significantly lower Qatar Airways flights tickets costs for the customers.

So far, the State of Qatar has not made a determined push for using natural gas for the aviation industry.

Baker said that high jet fuel costs have forced several carriers to reduce their flights operations in recent years. He said that if the aviation industry gives a serious thought over making use of natural gas as aviation fuel then this would prove to be beneficial for the industry as well as the passengers.
