SWISS announces operational results, posts Q1 2012 loss

SWISS flights failed to put up a strong showing in the first quarter of this year. The airline recently announced its operational results and appeared downcast at the negative outcome.

Providing details about its operational results, Swiss International Air Lines, also known as SWISS, said that it generated total operating income of $1.21 billion (1,167 million Swiss Francs) in the first quarter of 2012, a 2 percent improvement on $1.19 billion (1,150 million Swiss Francs), as compared to the same period in 2011.

The airline, however, said that due to a tough market environment it posted a $4.15 million (4 million Swiss Francs) operating loss for Q1, compared to a $16.60 million profit for the same period last year.
  
According to the airline, it achieved total income from operating activities of $1.21 billion (1,167 million Swiss Francs) for the first three months of 2012, an increase of 2 percent on the $1.19 billion (1,150 million Swiss Francs) of the first three months of 2011.

The airline said that the negative result is attributable to continuing pressure on yields, the less-than-favorable currency exchange rate situation and the high price of fuel.
