Ireland’s flagship carrier Aer Lingus recently announced it is planning to launch flights to Las Vegas and Miami. The airline said that Las Vegas will be its eleventh U.S. gateway. The Irish carrier will also be launching new flights to Miami in September 2017.
The launch of the new U.S. routes will be undoubtedly good news for Irish holidaymakers. Aer Lingus, however, in a statement said that while it is going to offer more options for travelers, it is at the same time committed to strengthening the position of Dublin Airport as a prominent transatlantic hub. The airline’s move will offer U.S. customers easy access to Ireland, UK and mainland Europe.
During the past few years, Aer Lingus has launched new transatlantic flights to Hartford, while also relaunching its route between Los Angeles and Dublin. Stephen Kavanagh, Chief Executive of Aer Lingus, said, “The flights to Las Vegas would be a winter service aimed at complementing the seasonality being witnessed by the airline on transatlantic routes.”
Kavanagh said that majority of the transatlantic traffic is generated by Aer Lingus during the summer months. The airline transported a total of 1.7 million passengers on transatlantic routes in 2016. The flights to Las Vegas are expected to be conducted twice or thrice weekly.
Kavanagh stated, “Las Vegas, the fabled “Sin City” has gained immense popularity with the Irish holidaymakers in recent years. This popularity can be gauged from the airline’s traffic data itself, which amply testify that Las Vegas is quite attractive to the Irish people. An opportunity around Las Vegas surely exists. We are yet to decide whether the flights would be just tactically during the winter months or year-round. So far, the travelers from Ireland and UK have been taking flights to Las Vegas via London Heathrow or Manchester. However, the residents of these two countries will now find it easy with the new direct flights from Dublin Airport to Las Vegas.”
