American Airlines to Phase Out the Usage of Plastic Straws

American Airlines has declared that it will abandon the use of drink stirrers and plastic straws and replace them with biodegradable options. The carrier stated that they would serve beverages with wood stir sticks and initiate the movement that is referred to as eco-friendly flatware in its airport lounges. American Airline, the biggest airline in the world stated that it’s going to switch from plastic straws with an alternative made from bamboo. The phase-out onboard would soon start in November. Essentially, it’s a global push to eliminate plastic usage which will remove more than 71,000 pounds of plastic per year.

Jill Surdek, vice president of flight service commented on the announcement, ‘We are abreast of the adverse effects of plastic on our environment. We are highly committed at doing the best for nature in order to sustain the planet for the travelers of the future generations.’

Alaska Airlines cited in the month of May that it would eradicate citrus picks and plastic straws and replace them with marine-friendly and sustainable substitutes and this would commence from the beginning of summer, this year. It has been stated by the representatives of Southwest, Delta and United airlines that they still continue the usage of plastic straws.

Owing to this biggest decision by American Airlines, Starbucks recently has also declared to phase out polystyrene foam cups and plastic straws by 2020 from their stores.
