British Airways to start A380 flights to Johannesburg

British Airways has plans to launch business class service to Johannesburg. The premier carrier said it would launch Airbus A380 service on London-Johannesburg route beginning February 12, 2014. The date is tentative and may be changed by the carrier.

The A380 is a double-decker super jumbo jet, which is the latest addition to BA’s fleet. The carrier will commence thrice a week service between the two cities. It will gradually increase this frequency to six flights per week from March 10, 2014.

This aircraft can accommodate 469 passengers. Its business class (Club World) has a seating capacity for 44 passengers on the main deck and 53 customers on the upper deck. The seating configuration on the upper deck is 2:3:2 across the cabin.

With this launch, the airline is set to offer new business class flights to Johannesburg and a unique experience to its customers. The city being the financial capital of South Africa is thronged by business travelers.

The airline believes the A380 planes are more fuel-efficient than Boeing 747 and has ordered 12 A380s for delivery through 2016. It expects to receive three planes this year and five next year.
