Delta Air Lines to stop flying out of McAllen airport from May 1

Delta Air Lines recently announced that it will stop flight operations out of McAllen’s Miller International Airport from May 1, 2012. The passengers will no longer be able to get flight deals or book air tickets to McAllen from May onwards because of the decision being taken by the airline.

The airline in a statement said that the number of passengers for its planes only averaged 60 percent at the McAllen airport. However, the planes need to be 75 percent full in order to be profitable.

The airline has already sounded out its decision to McAllen airport officials.

Delta Air Lines has entered into a passenger protection agreement with United/Continental and American Airlines in order to save the passengers from facing inconveniences. According to the airline, the agreement will ensure that any flights booked through Delta Air Lines for May 1 or beyond will be re-booked on another airline thus minimizing any disruption of services for passengers.

Delta Air Lines has its main hub at Atlanta, and currently offers more than 13,000 daily flights along with its trans-Atlantic joint venture partners Air France-KLM and Alitalia to various worldwide destinations, including Amsterdam, Cincinnati, Detroit, Memphis, Minneapolis-St. Paul, New York-JFK, Paris-Charles de Gaulle, Salt Lake City and Tokyo-Narita.
