Eastern Air Lines acquires its first Boeing 737

Low-cost start-up Eastern Air Lines recently received its first Boeing 737-800 aircraft. The airline announced that it is planning to relaunch its flights from Miami. The Boeing aircraft delivered to the Miami-based airline was being earlier flown by Kenya Airways.

Media reports said that Eastern Air Lines, apart from its first Boeing aircraft, also wants to purchase 10 new Boeing 737-800 aircrafts and already placed orders for it.

According to reports, the flights from Miami will be relaunched only after the Miami-based Eastern Air Lines Group Inc. was able to secure the iconic airline brand in the year 2011.

A spokesperson of Eastern Air Lines said that the company initially wants to begin charter flights and would later on start operating as a regular full-fledged service carrier. The airline had earlier indicated that it wanted to begin operations in December 2014, but this has been postponed and the airline expects to launch its flights services only from March 2015.

The airline has not yet disclosed the destinations it is planning to fly from its main hub at Miami. However, the company has said that the Bahamas and Cancun could be the possible destinations in future.

The reports said that the original Eastern Air Lines initially started operations in 1927 and gradually earned a name for itself by becoming one of the biggest and reputed airline brands in the United States. However, after several years of its operations the airline had to face financial turmoil and had to be abruptly shut down in 1991.

The original Eastern Air Lines was based at Miami, and the decision therefore to relaunch flights from Miami by the “new” Eastern Air Lines has evoked nostalgic response from the people of South Florida after the news broke out. The airline is now returning to its Miami headquarters after a gap of 23 years.
