In fact, there is a history behind the celebration of the Fiestas de San Lorenzo. The traditional neighborhood of Lavapiés in Madrid had Jews living for many centuries. It is here that the Church of San Lorenzo is now located, where once the ancient synagogue of Lavapiés used to stand. San Lorenzo, in whose memory the Church is built, was one of the seven deacons of Rome. He was arrested by the Pope in 257, who demanded that the treasures of the Church be brought before him. However, a few days later San Lorenzo presented before the Pope a number of poor, lame and helpless people saying that they were the treasures of the Church. This enraged the Pope and San Lorenzo was finally executed. To celebrate martyrdom and commemorate his death the Fiestas de San Lorenzo in Lavapiés is held every year in Madrid.
