Beaches Going Bigger What once appeared like a receding beach line and a trigger to dwindling visitors, Fort Myers beaches are being revamped through a colossal effort of sorts. Sands from as far as Gulf of Mexico is being pumped in and the local beach side is being revitalized to offer more space for the vacationers as well as the locals to loiter around. The move is supposed to help in drawing more vacationers to Fort Myers and boost the local tourism industry.
This massive effort, which is estimated to cost around $4.2 million, will re-nourish the eroding Fort Myers beaches and cover an expanse between Bowditch Point and South of Lynn Hall Park. The news has been welcomed by the locals who once enjoyed the beaches but had to contend with an ever decreasing beach area due to unchecked erosion.
The project will place 420,752 cubic yards of sand on to the beach. While critics see this development as a waste of resources since re-nourished beaches are known to erode back, locals are rejoicing for they will get a bigger beach to troll around.
The re-nourishment work has some natural disaster-shield angle to it as well. As per experts, when Hurricane Charley had come in Lovers Key, the sand in front of the Pavilion had protected it from major destruction whereas the bridge had lost 100 feet. Through this revitalizing initiative, they are hoping that the imported sand will work as shield against hurricanes as well.
