Great Lakes Airlines to stop flying to six smaller cities

The Cheap Airfares provided by Great Lakes Airlines for travel to/from Minneapolis-St. Paul to some of the smaller cities in the region would no longer be available to the customers now. Media reports recently said that Great Lakes Airlines, a low-cost carrier, has decided to stop flying to six smaller cities around the region. The airline said that an industry-wide pilot shortage is to be blamed for the service cuts.

The reports quoting an official of Great Lakes Airlines said that the cities to be affected by the airline’s decision include Ironwood (Michigan), Mason City and Fort Dodge (Iowa), Jamestown and Devil Lake (North Dakota), and Thief River Falls (Minnesota). The airline is based at Wyoming and had been operating flights services to these cities to/from Minneapolis-St. Paul. The airline has also completely closed down its hub in Minneapolis. The customers who had already booked tickets for travel to any of these six airports would be refunded.

According to media reports, the airline’s decision to stop flying to these smaller cities is greatly causing worries to the customers. The federal Department of Transportation has indicated that various airlines would be sent proposals to serve Mason City by this month. Pam Osgood, Manager of the Mason City Municipal Airport, said that there will be no service for the next two months, but all efforts will be made to resume flights services from the city soon.
