This festival, which is one of the wackiest and best in Hong Kong, is characterized by folkloric costumes, traditional handicrafts, crowded festive streets, and crowned by the race to the top of the bun towers.

One of the liveliest events in Hong Kong, the Cheung Chau Bun Festival takes place every year in late April or early May in the little island of Cheung Chau, the smallest of Hong Kong’s outlying islands. It’s in fact a lunar festival that is celebrated in the fourth moon of the year. The festival takes place only in this Hong Kong’s lone village of Cheung Chau and attracts thousands of tourists every year who buy cheap tickets to Hong Kong and come to see this festival by cheapest flights to Hong Kong.

Watching the festival is just great fun and quite exciting. Even you too would love to see this festival when you buy cheap flights tickets to Hong Kong and reach by cheap air flights to Hong Kong. It’s a really wonderful sight to see hundreds of men scramble up the side of a 60 ft bun tower and pluck off plastic buns. The competitors who climb on the bun tower make all efforts to beat their rivals in plucking off more buns than your competitors until all of the nuns have been completely pulled off. The competition sometimes becomes violent as well. The traditional bun climb had to be stopped in 1978 after the collapsing of a tower injuring 30 climbers during the event. However, ever since 2005 the festival has been reintroduced. The event has toned down a bit but the fun and excitement remains as usual.

The Cheung Chau Festival parade is a major highlight of the festival in which floats and dragon dances fill the street. Groups of children dressed up as mythological Chinese characters hoisted up on a 5 ft pole and made to look as if they’re floating down the streets are taken out in a parade. Thousands of foreign tourists come by cheapest flight to Hong Kong to see this amazing festival.
