Low cost Frontier Airlines now a part of Indigo Partners

Frontier Airlines has a new owner. The news is official and confirmed as Indigo Partners announced it through an official statement. The firm has put all kinds of anticipation to rest by stating that the sale of the low cost carrier is complete through an affiliate. The acquisition from erstwhile owners Republic Airways Holdings ended on December 3, 2013.

Frontier has been offering Cheap Airfare to passengers ever since it commenced operations in 1994. The Denver based airline operates flights to over 70 destinations across the United States, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, and Mexico. However, the airline has faced serious financial crunches during its course of service and at one point had to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Subsequently it was sold to Republic Airways Holdings in 2009, and it operated as its wholly owned subsidiary. The company in turn further decided to sell or spin off the airline in 2012. Since then speculation is rife about its acquisition by a new owner. The news, confirmed only lately, has pulled the curtains to the long pending deal.

As per the reports, Frontier will continue to be headquartered in Denver, Colorado. Indigo Partners is a private equity firm founded in 2003 and W.A. Franke heads the firm. The firm is keen in investing in air transportation and associated industry. It is also a prominent investor in Singapore based Tiger Airways and Fort Lauderdale based Spirit Airlines. It is also the lead investor in the European Wizz Air, and Mexican Volaris Airlines. Its headquarters are located in Phoenix, Arizona.
