Lufthansa mulling not to drop daily flights to Charlotte

Germany’s national carrier Lufthansa recently indicated that it is not planning to stop daily flights to Charlotte Douglas International Airport. To affirm its decision the airline announced changes in its management at Charlotte.

Travel experts said that with Lufthansa’s alliance partner US Airways stopping flights to/from Charlotte after its merger with American Airlines, it was feared that Lufthansa might curtail its flights services to Charlotte.

Nils Haupt, spokesman of Lufthansa, however said that the airline doesn’t have any plans to stop services to Charlotte in near future. He said that the Charlotte region continued to be a strong base of several German-owned companies and provided adequate corporate business to Lufthansa so that it remained profitable. He in fact reiterated that the Charlotte route is among the most profitable for the airline.

Haupt remarked that the Charlotte-Munich route being currently served by Lufthansa is an important link to European economies, particularly electronic and automotive industries in southern Germany.

He said that ever since US Airways abandoned Lufthansa as Star Alliance partner, there has been growing concern about the airline’s sustainability here. This has led the airline to hold meetings at regular intervals with Charlotte airport and business leaders only to provide assurances that Lufthansa will continue to operate from here. He said that within a period of six months Lufthansa had to hold a meeting for the second time in this regard.

Lufthansa is presently the largest of three foreign carriers, including Insel Air and Air Canada Jazz, operating flights to Charlotte Douglas International Airport.
