Lufthansa places order of USD 4 billion to Airbus and Boeing

Lufthansa, the German flagship carrier, has revealed in an official statement that an order of 30 new passenger jets with Airbus and five new cargo aircrafts with Boeing have been placed. The orders are worth USD 4 billion.

The deliveries of the new passenger aircrafts by Airbus that is expected by 2016 will include 25 A320 neo and five A321 neo carriers. The other five new Boeing 777 cargo planes will be delivered beginning 2013.

The airline in a statement said that the new aircrafts will be utilized to fetch the rising demands of air travel.

The total fleet strength of the airline in 2009 was 722 aircrafts.

The new A320neo aircraft, which is similar to A320 passenger plane, will be equipped with new and more efficient engines. The new aircraft is likely to pose a great challenge to Boeing over its strategy in the present markets.

Acknowledging this challenge, Boeing has also said that it is into a process of upgrading its 737 aircrafts to meet the market demand.
