Malaysia Airlines to become Member of Oneworld Alliance

Malaysia Airlines is all set to become a member of oneworld, world’s leading airline alliance.

Chief Executives of alliance’s member airlines unanimously elected Malaysia Airlines as oneworld member designate at a meeting on the sidelines of IATA’s 2011 World Air Transport Summit in Singapore on June 6, 2011.

A formal alliance membership agreement is expected to be completed soon. With the completion of the agreement,

is likely to start flying as part of oneworld late next year.

Tan Sri Dr. Mohd. Munid Abdul Majid, Chairman of Malaysia Airlines, said, “The Board of Malaysia Airlines had targeted entry into an alliance this year. I am glad we are at the stage where the initiation with oneworld is formalized.”

Malaysia Airlines is presently into codeshare agreement with oneworld partners Cathay Pacific and Royal Jordanian.

After becoming part of oneworld alliance, the customers of Malaysia Airlines will gain access to oneworld’s global network covering almost 950 destinations in 150 countries, served by a combined fleet of more than 2,600 aircraft operating 10,000 flights a day and carrying 358 million passengers a year.

Cathay Pacific, Japan Airlines and Royal Jordanian are the three established oneworld member airlines currently serving Malaysia.
