Irish carrier Aer Lingus has announced it is mulling launching new direct flights between Las Vegas and Dublin from next winter schedule. The planned service will be initially a seasonal one, but may be extended in future depending on its performance.
Stephen Kavanagh, Chief Executive of Aer Lingus, said, “The launch of the flights to the party town Las Vegas is expected to be welcomed and appreciated by Irish holidaymakers. The company also hopes that with Dublin Airport holding unenviable position as a transatlantic hub a large number of travelers from the UK and mainland Europe may be attracted to fly with Aer Lingus to Las Vegas.”
Kavanagh stated that Aer Lngus is into talks and seriously working on its plans to launch a seasonal flight o Las Vegas. The fact that winter schedule is being chosen to launch the service demonstrates the dire need to find a balance during the peak summer season, where the U.S. travelers are the main source of the airline’s traffic and Ireland being their prime holiday destination. “The flights to Las Vegas during the winter would be viewed as attempting “natucomplement” the seasonality that Aer Lingus is seeing on its transatlantic routes,” he added.
Aer Lingus is a subsidiary of the International Airlines Group (IAG), which is also the owner of British Airways. It can be said that majority of transatlantic traffic is generated by Aer Lingus during summer season. The airline had transported a total of 1.7 million passengers on transatlantic routes during summer in 2016.
According to Kavanagh, a demand currently exists and therefore the Las Vegas service is being planned, which is likely to be operated twice or thrice weekly. The traffic data of Aer Lingus also shows that Las Vegas is considered to be an attractive destination for Irish travelers. Considering all these facts, it has been concluded that launching flights to Las Vegas is surely a great opportunity for the airline, whether the service is year-round or just for the winter months.
