Norwegian Airlines launched its first nonstop transoceanic flights to the United States from Barcelona in June this year. The airline’s maiden flight departed for Los Angeles International Airport from Barcelona-El Prat Airport on June 5, 2017with a Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft configured with a total of 291 seats. The service will be conducted thrice weekly between the two destinations.
The seasonal flight will be operated till the end of the current winter season. A total of 255,000 seats would be offered to customers traveling between Los Angeles and Barcelona till the conclusion of the seasonal service. Apart from Los Angeles- Barcelona route, the leading Scandinavian carrier also launched flights on different new routes as well.
Media reports said that Norwegian Airlines also launched flights between Barcelona and Oakland starting from June 7. The flights on this route will be operated thrice weekly. The airline will also be launching new flights between Fort Lauderdale and Barcelona effective from August 22, 2017, with a twice weekly service. Moreover, the airline is also planning to launch flights services to new routes in Latin America in future.
Alfons Claver, Communications and Institutional Relations Manager of Norwegian Airlines, said, “The company sees a great opportunity in Barcelona. Last year nearly 200,000 passengers traveled between California and Barcelona without direct air connectivity. We thought that there exists a great potential for launching direct flights to the United States. With the launch of several new U.S. routes we are quite positive and hope that the introduction of nonstop flights to key U.S. cities from Barcelona would prove to be beneficial for the people planning to travel to the United States from Barcelona.”
Claver said that Norwegian Airlines had been making extensive efforts for the past several months for launching direct flights to U.S. cities. The efforts have also paid off. The first 10 days of the launch of operations saw above 5,000 passengers traveling to/from the United States with Norwegian Airlines.
