Proposed American-US Airways merger to curtail fare hikes

The proposed merger of American Airlines and US Airways is unlikely to make the U.S. fliers jittery and they will continue to have access to cheap airfares as usual.

Travel analysts have elucidated that in all likelihood American Airlines and US Airways will refrain from increasing fares as it would give the U.S. aviation regulators just another excuse to oppose their proposed merger.

The U.S. Department of Justice has already filed a legal challenge this August contending that the proposed merger to create the world’s largest carrier would in fact cut competition and lead to higher airfares. The federal lawsuit seeking to stop the merger of the two airlines is loaded in favor of the penny-pinching fliers for now.

The two airlines fear that if they resort to fare hike now the lawsuit will work against them providing more reason to the federal authorities to effective fight the merger. The two carriers would in fact prefer to wait until the lawsuit is settled or won by either side.

The lawsuit filed by the U.S. Department of Justice is scheduled to be heard in a Washington courtroom starting from November 25, 2013.
