Qantas to soon permit use of Electronic Devices during Takeoff and Landing

Qantas Airways may soon permit its passengers to use their Smartphones, tablets and other electronic devices during takeoffs and landing. The airline is awaiting decision from CASA in next two months.

Qantas is working with CASA, Australia’s Civil Aviation Safety Authority to approve the usage of electronic devices during takeoffs and landing. This will enable passengers to use their personal devices during all stages of their flight. The approval is expected in one or two months, post which passengers will be able to listen to music, enjoy games and /or watch videos uninterruptedly.

Olivia Wirth, Qantas Group Executive Manager for Brand, Marketing and Corporate Affairs said nowadays almost every passenger carries some or the other Smartphone. We are also aware the flying time for passengers is like an oasis of solitude. Most of our travelers including business class travelers feel that it is utterly important for them to be in touch with their work, family or friends.

Qantas has become the first Australian aviation company to contact CASA in this matter. A lot of European and American carriers already permit travelers to keep their gadgets switched on. Qantas at presently is on its way to extend its entertainment offerings and is in the process towards shifting to ipads and back-of-seat screens. It is also working towards providing a better Wi-Fi service in-flight so that passengers can enjoy smooth access to on-demand entertainment on their personal gadgets.
