SAS to launch business class-only 737 to Houston on August 20

Ever heard of a Boeing 737-700 jet with only 44 seats? Yes, this sounds true and music to ears. If you have traveled on Boeing 737-700 aircraft, you might be aware that there are usually 128 to 140 seats. But, this big change has come because of Scandinavian Airlines or SAS.

Media reports recently said that Scandinavian Airlines is planning to launch operations of a business class-only Boeing 737-700 service from Houston to Norwegian city of Stavanger. The flights will begin operations starting from August 20, 2014. The reports indicated that the Boeing 737-700 aircraft is being wet-leased from PrivatAir and would be sporting the SAS livery. The aircraft has been customized keeping in view the airline’s motto “SAS Long Haul Business Class concept on board”. The airline will provide best services, sumptuous meals and state-of-the-art in-flight entertainment system.

Rickard Gustafson, Scandinavian Airlines’ President and CEO, emphasized that the aircraft has been designed keeping in view the significance of Houston-Stavanger route and all that it means for the oil and gas industry. He said that the aircraft would be able to fulfill the travel needs of this defined market.

Gustafson said that launch of the route on August 20 has been appropriately timed keeping in view the hosting of a major oil exhibition “Offshore Northern Seas” in Stavanger.

The flight distance between Houston and Stavanger is over 4,200 miles. However, the normal flying distance that a Boeing 737-700 aircraft can cover is 3,200 miles. Gustafson said that though this is not a cause for worry because this exclusive business jet is being fitted with fewer seats, which will significantly reduce its weight and enhance its overall flight distance capability.

Scandinavian Airlines will however not limit this business class-only flight to executives from the oil industry. The tickets will be up for sale for other customers as well who are willing to pay for the luxury and exclusivity. The sale of tickets will begin from April 29, 2014.
