United Airlines curtailing flights to Quebec this winter

The decision by United Airlines to effect cutbacks in major airports throughout North America has dampened the spirits of its customers who had until now benefited from cheap airfares provided by the airline quite often.

The move of the airline is being seen as an effective step to tackle its tottering finances and offset recurring losses. United Airlines recently announced it will be curtailing its flights to/from Quebec’s Jean Lesage International Airport from January 2015.

United Airlines is presently operating thrice daily flights to Newark from Quebec City, which will now be reduced to twice daily flights. The airline also indicated that it will be stopping its flights to Chicago from January 6 to March 5, 2015.

Quebec is not the only market where United Airlines is bringing major changes. In fact, the airline is in the process of restructuring its entire strategy itself. The airline is curtailing flights to Quebec despite a gradual increase in the passenger numbers reported at Quebec’s Jean Lesage International Airport over the past several years. The airline said that there has been a slight decline in passengers to/from the U.S.

The recent move by United Airlines emanates from the stiff competition being posed by Air Canada on the profitable Canada-U.S. route. Media reports said that Air Canada is fast gaining ground and cornering a major share in the lucrative U.S.-Canada aviation market. According to the reports, the competition has perturbed United Airlines and prompted it to bring in vital changes in its North American strategy.

United Airlines in a statement said that the passengers who have already booked their flight tickets to Chicago during the announced cutbacks will now be redirected through Newark Liberty International Airport.
