United Airlines increases bag fees to $100

Traveling with heavier bags will be costly as passengers taking United Airlines flights will have to pay more for their air tickets now.

United Airlines recently announced it will begin charging $100 for a second checked bag for flights between North America, South America, Europe, India, Middle East and Africa.

The airline had until now been charging $70 for this, which had been hiked from $50 last year.

United Airlines in a statement said that it was forced to hike baggage fees because of the increased jet fuel cost and handling.

However, the airline said that the fee change is not applicable to those booking flights to Canada, Mexico, Caribbean or Central America. The airline is currently charging $35 for a second bag for those traveling to a domestic destination or these countries.

The new bag fee is expected to significantly boost the airline’s revenue, which may increase by $30 million annually.
