United Airlines stops Atlantic City flights from Chicago, Houston

United Airlines has stopped operating flights to Atlantic City effective from December 3, 2014. The airline’s move will make the customers worrisome who had been traveling to/from the main hubs of Houston and Chicago.

The flights were launched in April this year from the two hubs aiming to increase services and boost tourism to the Atlantic City. The flights were being operated daily.

A spokesperson of the airline issued a statement saying that it’s a matter of great disappointment that the service from the Atlantic City International Airport had to be finally stopped as it couldn’t meet the expectations. The passenger demand for the service was reviewed and it was found that the Chicago-Atlantic City and Houston-Atlantic City routes were unprofitable and unsustainable.

Atlantic City Mayor Don Guardian was though disappointed, but also expressed optimism. He said that despite the loss of United Airlines services, the city aviation authorities will try to bring other carriers for operating flights to/from the airport. He disclosed that the city officials are already into talks with one international carrier and a couple of domestic carriers. An agreement is expected by the end of this year, and flights may begin as early as next summer.

Guardian further said that Spirit Airlines and Fly Borgata will continue serving the Chicago market. He said that it was becoming difficult for the United Airlines to fill the flights and also wasn’t able to compete with the cheap airfares being provided by Spirit Airlines keeping in with the normal practice it adheres to.
