US Airways suspends flights between Detroit and Washington

US Airways has recently announced to suspend nonstop flights between Detroit and Washington. The short hiatus will be from August 18 to November 5, 2014. It will resume service from Nov 6 with four nonstop flights per day.

US Department of Justice has asked US Airways and American Airlines to temporarily suspend few of its routes; including the one US Airways is operating from Regan, since both the airlines are about to close their merger.

The suspension will provide Delta Airlines with complete monopoly on this route leaving fewer options for passengers to opt. However, as no other airline has opted to provide service on this route airport officials requested the government and the airlines on this matter. This resulted in the resumption this service from Nov 6.

Tom Naughton, CEO of Detroit Metro Airport, said that it was a priority for us to provide our passengers with more than one alternative flight to such an important destination. Joe Cambron, Director of Air Service Development for Detroit Metro Airport, said that it is a victory for Metro Airport passengers.

The Detroit Metro Airport has added two new carriers including Alaska Airlines and JetBlue. Spirit Airlines has added additional services to Kansas City and Minneapolis and Frontier has added new services to Washington Dulles and Wilmington from this airport. The airport serves as a hub for Delta Airlines and Spirit Airlines.

According to analysts, US Airlines is likely to earn a profit of around $4 billion is the second quarter of this year. This is due to the regular inflow of passengers and no rise of fuel charges.
