Virgin Atlantic Airways recently said that it will be launching flight services between London and Cancun from June 12, 2012.
Cancun will be the 33rd destination of the airline.
The airline in a statement said that twice-a-week service between London and the Mexican destination of Cancun is expected to attract around 94,000 customers in the first year.
With the start of the new route, the Virgin Atlantic Airways aims to strengthen its leisure network from London Gatwick. Nine leading long haul destinations are already featured in the United States and the Caribbean.
According to the airline, the new route is expected to generate nearly US$25 million of tourism revenue every year to the Cancun market. Besides, it is also likely to create about 650 jobs within the tourism and aviation sectors in Mexico.
Expressing his delight over the announcement to begin flights to Cancun next year, Richard Branson, President of Virgin Atlantic Airways, said that many customers had been demand the start of direct flight to the exciting Cancan for past several years. Tourism is already thriving in Cancun with its superb beaches, cultural sites and great hotels, he said.
Branson said that by being able to add this route to network the Virgin Atlantic Airways is going to benefit further as Cancun is among the top five long-haul leisure destinations for UK travelers.
Virgin Atlantic Airways will be deploying Boeing 747-400 aircraft configured with three classes of service featuring 14 Upper Class Suites, 58 Premium Economy seats and 379 Economy seats. The flight services will be operated twice per week.
At present, the airline with a 39 long-haul aircraft fleet operates flight services to 33 destinations across the world. The airline said that last year it carried a total of 6 million passengers.
