Canada’s second-largest carrier WestJet Airlines launched flights to Fort Lauderdale from Calgary effective November 30, 2015. The service between the two destinations will be operated twice weekly on Mondays and Fridays. The route will be served using a Boeing 737-700 aircraft.
Calgary has now become the seventh airport in Canada to be provided connectivity from Fort Lauderdale. Key Canadian cities such as Montreal and Toronto are already being served from Fort Lauderdale airport with year-round services. The other seasonal routes linked from Fort Lauderdale in Canada include Winnipeg, Quebec City, Ottawa and Halifax.
Meanwhile, WestJet Airlines has announced it will extend the fees being charged for baggage and seat selection to international destinations as well. This will become effective from early 2016. The airline took the decision considering the increase in its overall revenue in Q3 2015 through these fees on domestic routes.
The customers travelling on international flights will now be required to pay a $25 fee for one checked bag. The fee on international routes thus effectively matches the current levy placed on checked bags on domestic routes by the airline.
By taking this step Westjet Airlines has now matched baggage fees being currently charged by Air Canada on some U.S. and Caribbean destinations. Peter Fitzpatrick, Spokesman of Air Canada, has however said that the airline is not planning to introduce a first bag fee on international routes now.
WestJet Airlines has however termed the fees for checked bags and seat selection on international routes as “unbundling” fares so that the customers will only have to pay for those services being used by them.
