WestJet has decided to engage in fierce competition with its rival Air Canada on its home turf in Quebec. The airline will be undertaking its largest ever expansion in its history. The move of the Calgary-based has come after it significantly boosted its service in French to cater to the French-speaking population in Canada’s second most populous province.
A spokesperson of WestJet said that the airline has now positioned itself to further expand its network in Quebec, the predominantly French-speaking province in eastern Canada and the second most populous in the country. The airline said that all its flight attendants hired since 2004 are now bilingual – well-versed in both English and French languages. Most importantly, both official languages – English and French – are spoken by nearly 94 percent of the flight attendants on the regional WestJet Encore service.
WestJet, which is presently operating 140 flights in Quebec province, has announced that it will be adding 105 more flights per week to the province. The airline had been serving Quebec since 2003. The expansion in the province is its biggest ever. The new expansion will also see the airline adding daily flights services between Quebec City and Montreal, Boston and Halifax with the help of its 70-seat Bombardier Q-400 aircrafts.
Media reports said that WestJet would launch twice daily flights services to Halifax effective from March 15, 2017. The flights to Quebec City will be launched from June 15 this year, with four-time daily service. The airline will also be launching twice daily flights to Boston starting from October 15. The airline also announced it will be increasing its frequencies of Calgary-Toronto and Quebec City-Vancouver routes. The flights services on these two routes will be served with the help of Boeing 737 aircrafts.
Isabelle Arthur, spokeswoman of Air Canada, said, “We welcome WestJet to expand to Quebec. Air Canada is ready to face the challenge and positioned itself very well to successfully compete with any airline worldwide. We have been operating year-round service and offering low fares in every market.”
