Virgin Atlantic Airways resuming flights to Mumbai

Travelers from UK will soon see Virgin Atlantic Airways flights to Mumbai being resumed after a period of three years.

The airline has decided to resume its flights services to Mumbai as it is now sensing an opportunity to extend its network in the flourishing India-US and India-UK markets.

Virgin Atlantic Airways has taken the move to announce the resumption of its services to Mumbai only six months after India’s ailing private carrier Kingfisher Airlines suspended its flights to London and its plans to join the rival British Airways-led oneworld alliance couldn’t fructify.

Had Kingfisher Airlines joined the oneworld alliance, Virgin Atlantic Airways’ rival British Airways would have been the biggest beneficiary as it would have succeeded in gaining a firm foothold and cornering a big chunk from the Indian market. This would have made it greatly difficult for Virgin Atlantic Airways to grab a larger market share.

Earlier, Virgin Atlantic Airways operated flights between London and Mumbai between 2005 and 2009. The airline is making a comeback now particularly when other foreign carriers are curtailing their India flights or stopping operations completely citing increase in tariff at Delhi airport and increasing operating costs.
