IAG to seek 120 Airbus A320 aircrafts for Vueling Airlines

International Airlines Group (IAG), which owns British Airways, Iberia Airline and Vueling Airlines, has secured firm orders and options for up to 220 Airbus A320 family short-haul aircraft. The company however said that it will be acquiring 120 of these aircrafts for its subsidiary Vueling Airlines.

The company said that with the acquisition of the new aircrafts the Barcelona-based Vueling Airlines will be able to replace some of its existing Airbus A320 fleet and work towards expanding its business further. According to IAG, the order comprises of 62 short-haul aircrafts from Airbus A320 family, including 30 A320ceo and 32 A320neo. Apart from these 62 aircrafts, the airline also has 58 options. The firm orders would be delivered to Vueling Airlines between 2015 and 2020.

The International Airlines Group said that it has additionally secured 100 Airbus A320 neo options that could be used in future for any of the airlines in the Group, including Vueling Airlines, British Airways and Iberia Airline, for aircraft replacement requirements.

Willie Walsh, Chief Executive of International Airlines Group, said that Vueling Airlines has successfully managed to expand its business and gain profitability by targeting both growth markets as well as those areas where weak competitors are reducing capacity. He said that Vueling Airlines will benefit greatly with the inclusion of the new aircrafts as it will be able to continue its expansion and replace some of its older fleet with modern, fuel efficient aircrafts.
